"Our new park provides a great place for dogs to exercise and interact with other dogs,” said Cliff Baber, PE, director of public works for Maryland Heights. “Residents can let their dogs run free and enjoy other dogs in ways that go beyond walking a dog on a leash.”
BEX Construction Services worked closely with Baber and the city’s parks superintendent to complete civil design and build the new park. “We worked together on the various park features and fence layout,” Baber said. “It worked well due to the quick response and availability of the BEX team, which did a great job. They kept us informed of issues as they arose and worked quickly to resolve them.”

Because the original dog park had suffered repeated flooding from the nearby Fee Fee Creek, the city elected to reduce the park footprint, replace the original granite sand groundcover and install sod. BEX Project Manager Cole Libbert said the park was relocated nearby to higher ground and BEX borrowed about 200 cubic feet of fill to raise the park elevation out of harm’s way. After reshaping the site, BEX totally rebuilt interior fixtures and electrical features and installed new siding for restroom facilities. Four seating areas, two topped by attractive pergolas, were built for the dog’s human friends.
The $630,000 project was supported by a flood recovery grant through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). After a year of planning, the five-month construction project was completed in time for Labor Day 2023.
Libbert noted, “The city staff were great partners on this project, and all of our subs were outstanding, going above and beyond in accommodating the changing scope as Superintendent Mark Burlison and I worked with the city to refine design decisions.” Major subcontractors for the park renovation included Advanced Drywall and Carpentry; Breakout Concrete; Custom Design Fence & Deck; Ideal Landscape Group; Liberty Electric, Inc.; McFry Excavating, Inc.; Vanwell Construction Services LLC; and William G. Cocos Plumbing Co., Inc.
